Your Comprehensive Exit Plan

Putting together a customized exit plan is much like creating a set of construction plans. It is putting the desired end-goal into a working plan. A comprehensive plan should include the following:

Owner Goals and Objectives

Action Items:

  • Does the contractor need coaching to help reduce his/her workload? To solidify his/her personal vision?

  • Has the contractor completed a personal financial plan that tests his/her retirement assumptions against inflation, longevity, and probability measures?

    Financial Analysis

    Action items:

  • Does the contractor need a professionally prepared valuation for the business?

  • Can or should the company develop financial KPIs, a budget, cash flow analysis, or improved financial reporting?

    Planning Analysis

    Action Items:

  • Does the company need Business Continuity Instructions?

  • Should the contractor begin to develop transfer schedules for management duties, ownership responsibilities, outside relationships, and employee or family skills development?

    Revenue/Profit Analysis

    Action Items:

  • Should the company develop a sales strategy for new products or markets? Would that require new vendors, personnel, or capabilities?

  • Is there an opportunity to develop recurring revenue through a client for life program development?

    Operations Analysis

Action Items:

  • Are company job descriptions, employment manual, operating procedures in writing, and up to date?

  • Should any employees receive stay bonuses, profit-based incentives, retention agreements, or deferred compensation plans?
